The next feature in our Little Rock Fashion Week 2011 features is a unique collection and person:  The Grafetti Collection from 13-year old Aaliyah Fisher of Little Rock, Arkansas.
What lead you to become a designer?
“My great grandmother made clothes and blankets for family members.  I just started sewing with her then started designing and making clothes.” Aaliyah’s goal is to attend design school in New York and design clothes for celebrities.
What inspires your work?
“I love to just draw a design and then see it come to life.”  Aaliyah likes her clothes to be feminine and funky are the same time.  At only 13 years old, she not only designs clothes, but has a unique understanding of exactly what young people want to wear.  Her website says “Aaliyah loves vintage and floral prints. Throughout her collection you will see a lot of different, unique, classy, & creative designs.”
Why do you choose Little Rock Fashion Week to show your collection?
“I want to get as much exposure as I can for my clothes.”  As someone so young Aaliyah is mature beyond her years and is a very focused, driven person, who know exactly what she wants to do in life.  That can’t be said by very many people.  Aaliyah is definitely someone to watch!  Remember her goal??

Today we’re excited to feature the Little Rock Fashion Week 2010 Fashion Designer of the Year, Nicole McGehee, creator of the Nicole McGehee Collection.
How long have they been designing clothes?  Nicole has been designing clothes professionally since 2009.  But she said “I’ve been sewing since I’ve been 5 years old.  I used to make clothes for my Barbie Dolls.”
Who has inspired you in the past?  McGehee said her biggest inspiration and mentor is Korto Monolu.  McGehee designs clothes for people who may not have the “perfect body” shape. She is challenged most by molding her designs around making women feel good.  “Women who have big breasts, no breasts, big hips, no hips, whatever it is. I don’t have anything against cosmetic surgery, but many people can’t afford it.  And just because you can’t afford it doesn’t mean you can’t look great and feel great!!”
What lead you becoming a designer?  “I love the challenge in the process of making clothes. I learned to sew when I have five years old watching my mother in the basement of our house.”  McGehee said she has no formal education in fashion design. “It’s just hard work and staying with it. Through all the trial and error I’m driven to keep pushing to where I’m going!!”
Why are they displaying their collection at LRFW?  “It’s a great show on a much bigger scale in the smaller Little Rock market.  One person can only do so much by themselves. LRFW has been my voice at the national &/or international level.”
How has participating in LRFW benefited them in the past?  “Exposure…a lot more exposure than I could have gotten on my own.  Things like the LRFW Facebook page and the advertising allow me to have a much larger market than I can do on my own!!”
Do you have anything special to introduce at LRFW?  “OH YES!!”
